General description

Neck lift is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat around the jawline to create a more defined and younger-looking neck. Results can be long term, but neck lift surgery cannot stop the aging process.

Why is it done?

A neck lift is performed to reduce the signs of aging in the lower face. This stretch is usually done as part of a facelift.

Risks

Risks involved with neck lift surgery may include:

  • Bleeding under the skin (hematoma)
  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Gross scarring
  • Blood clots
  • Infection
  • Nerve injuries
  • Skin loss
  • Open wounds

Another possible risk of neck lift surgery is that you may not be satisfied with the results. In this situation, another surgery might be an option.

How do you prepare

Food and medicine

Your doctor may ask you to stop taking aspirin or other blood-thinning medications several days before your surgery. These include warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), heparin, aspirin, and other medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, etc.).

Other precautions

Since smoking tobacco promotes wrinkling of the skin and slows recovery and healing, your doctor will recommend that you stop smoking before having a neck lift.

Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and have someone stay with you the first night after the procedure.

What you can expect

Before the procedure

Before performing a neck lift, your doctor will consult with you to assess your health and discuss your goals and expectations. The doctor will then decide on the surgical method that best suits your case. He or she may suggest additional procedures, such as a brow lift, eyelid surgery, or facial rejuvenation, that can help you get the results you want.

Your face will be examined and measured, and photographs may also be taken so you can compare your appearance before and after surgery.

During the procedure

A neck lift can be performed under sedation and local anesthesia, where only part of the body is anesthetized, or under general anesthesia.

Liposuction is the most commonly used procedure. The surgeon makes a small incision behind each ear and under the chin. A specialized apparatus suctions the fat from the jawline and under the chin. If you have elastic skin and the only reason you are dissatisfied with the way your neck looks is because of fat, liposuction may give you a more defined neck.

But liposuction is not going to correct structural problems that contribute to the appearance of the neck. Your doctor will talk with you about the type of surgery that will be best for you depending on several factors, including the result you want, the cost, and why you are unhappy with your neck.

After the procedure

After neck lift surgery, you may have swelling and bruising.

You may need to wear a special garment that compresses your neck and helps reduce swelling. You will also need to have your head elevated above your heart and keep it straight. Don't twist or bend your neck.

Results

It may take weeks or months for the swelling and bruising to go away completely, and it can take up to six months for the incision lines to fade. In the meantime, be careful to protect your skin from the sun, don't wear clothing that you have to pull off over your head, and take care of your surgical incisions.
